"Areal" A real word?

"Areal" A real word?

"Areal" A real word?

(OP)
Is the word, "areal," meaning "in plan view," a word?  As an example; "The areal extent of the uncompacted fill is not known with certainty."

The word does appear as an adjective in one very old dictionary, but in a newer dictionary (abridged), it does not appear at all.  Has it declined in popularity?  I hope not because it is very useful to me.  What say you?

RE: "Areal" A real word?

Yes, it is a real word.

RE: "Areal" A real word?

I meant to add, that you should be able to find it under the word 'area', since areal is the adjective form of area.

"Areal" is a pleonasm in the example cited.

RE: "Areal" A real word?

Areal definitely is a word.  In addition to computer disk drive space, areal density is used in composite materials/fabrics to quantify mass divided by area.

The Webster's Collegiate Dictionary has it, adding areally as an adverb.
