How can I set up Excel to open a workbook as read-only without any warnings or prompts.

The situation is this, whenever Excel is opened on any computer in our network it opens a copy of "openme.xls" because a shortcut has been placed in the xlstart folder.

There is only one copy of "openme.xls" which resides on drive C: of computer "First to start".

When a second computer starts excel and "openme.xls" is opened the user is prompted to select "openme.xls" as a read-only or as notify. How do I force excel to open "openme.xls" as read-only without prompting the user?

Bear in mind that the command to open the "openme.xls" is not initiated by the user therefore he can not simply "Open Read Only" from the open dialog.

Thanks for any suggestions

RE: Automatically open read only

Have you tried checking the box "Read Only" under the file's properties (i.e. right click on the file icon and select properties)?

RE: Automatically open read only

(OP)
The file must remain writable to the computer named "First to start".

RE: Automatically open read only

Make a shared folder with read-only permission on computer "first to start" and place the file in that folder. It will allow other to see the file but not write to it.

Ciao.

RE: Automatically open read only

See Excel's help regarding shared workbooks.
