creating a shape like twisted soft serve twirl

creating a shape like twisted soft serve twirl

(OP)
I'm trying to create a shape that looks like a Mr. Softee twirl sitting on top of a half sphere. I've tried sweeping a cirlcular shape around a helix and having that sit on top of the half sphere...however when I go to core it out, the whole part kind of blows up (I guess due to the sweep not really having a solid form within the "twirl")....
Can anyone direct me as to how to creat this configuration... I will need to core the finished shape to .080 wall.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

You're probably on the right track with a sweep.  Perhaps add a guide curve or two to control your section better.  Use a point with a pierce constraint to relate your section to path and guide curves.

You may need to do this piecemeal with surfaces and stich it together afterward --OR-- have your section sketch be two concentric circles.

I would suggest trying to create a few cross sections then loft the shape.

Good Luck.

Try extruding a big block on top of your sphere.  Then create a helix inside of it, sweep a cut around your helix then use Offset Surface to create your shelled Mr. Softee.  I was able to do a very crude undefined version of that, I had some issues at the top of the twirl but I think with a little massage you can get it to achieve what you desire.

Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. And scratch where it itches.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I did wind up with the method suggested by aamorso.... there's a bit of piecing and stitching.... but I think that'll work.  Thanks all for your suggestions.

In 2005 you can do "flex", twisting/bending/stretching parts. If you have 05, give it a try.
