It won't prompt me for draawing template

It won't prompt me for draawing template

It won't prompt me for draawing template

(OP)
I've already gone to TOOLS>OPTIONS>SYSTEM OPTIONS>DRAWING TEMPLATES. The "Prompt User..." selection is checked. If I click on the "..." button to search for another template, it doesn't go to a file "explorer". It just pops up with the preview for the default template (as if I had just selected FILE>NEW>DRAW)

What the hell?? I never had this trouble with SW04

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

It's because you saved over your old drawing template that came with SW. If you overwrite that that option is gone. The only way yo get back is to remove or rename the file and do a modify. If that doesn't work then either get it from some one else or reinstall.

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

Did you change the Tools > Options > File Locations in SW04? Have you re-done that in SW05?

But I wouldn't be able to switch from an A size or a C or anything. SW04 would prompt me every time.

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

(OP)
CBL...nope I never messed with that ever.

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

(OP)
Ok well I went into the drawing. In my tree, I right clicked on the sheet format, and maanged to change it to the one I wanted. But my custom properties are now all over the place. I tried re-linking them to a new note, but it's still all messed up. But I guess that a subject for a separate thread.......

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

You will have to set up separate Drawing tempaltes for each sheet and size. Only the initial install of SW drawing Template will give the menu to allow you to select the tempalte and the size.

Also, after you create your dwg templates, save backups of them. You never know if you need them again after another SW upgrade. I have seen them get deleted somehow by IT dept.

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

But I've got my custom templates already done. I dinked with them a bit to get my properties back and all that. But it's when I 'm trying to start a new dwg, I can't get to my custom templates. It always defaults to a blank A size. My work-around rightn ow is to open the dwg, then to right click on the sheet format in the tree, go into properties, and THEN I get the window I want.

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

Start a new Drawing (Example) C size. Then change the to a C-size Sheet format and do a File/Save as/Drawing Template.

Next time you open that C-Size Template you will have a C-size Sheet format.

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

As CBL wrote, you need to do FILE-OPTIONS-SYSTEM OPTIONS-FILE LOCATIONS.
Then close, re-open.
Then go to FILE-OPTIONS-SYSTEM OPTIONS-DEFAULT TEMPLATES. Browse to all of your templates.

That's exactly what I've been doing.  Shouldn't the little button that says "Prompt user bla bla.." have an effect?

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

After the the first part, did you close then re-open?
It should work.
Or try doing the setup above, but do not check prompt user.

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

Mike,

I think there is some confusion here because of the different replies in this thread and your answers to each of them.

Is this what your wanting to see happen with your Drawing files when you open them?

Please let us know Specifically what you want to happen.

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

(OP)
YES! (SBaugh)....THAT's what I want...

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

Then see above in my first post why it's not possible to get that. You saved over the Default Drawing Template. You cannot get this to work with your templates. It has never been possible. You have to create all your Templates separately andi f you want to change them to something else then you are going to have to do it the way you have been doing it. RMB change the template and the size.

If someone has found a way to do this on all their custom Templates, then please enlighten me or us, because it's been like this for yearssss!

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

(OP)
Ok...I'm losing it now. Because since I switched from '04 to '05, I have only monkeyed with my custom template. I copied the one (that I somehow made in '04) and just dropped it into my "data" folder, with the other templates. In '04, when I would start a new dwg, I would just do FILE>NEW>Drawing>, and then I would get to the list of available templates (like in your little video), and my custom drawing template was at the bottom of the list.

But now, the sheet format that comes up IS the "stock" A-size Solidworks template.  I have to do my little work-around to get to MY custom template.....which BTW won't retain any of my selected options, like units and precision ...but that's another thread

I'm sorry if I'm being obtuse...but  I never touched any of the original dwg templates.....

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

(OP)
And also, (going back to my first post). If I go into SYSTEM OPTIONS>DEFAULT TEMPLATES, in the field for the drawing template, I have this:

C:\Program Files\SolidWorks\data\templates\Drawing.drwdot

then to the right of that field, it has the "..." button. It will not let me change this text (manually) at all, and the "..." button doesn't do anything.

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

If you have 2 versions of SW on the same system then you need to follow CBL's advice on the File Locations, because your SW05 maybe pulling the wrong Template data up.

BUT I didn;t delete the old ones out of the list. Now it seems to work.

Thanks all for your patience!

(and how did this thread earn a star?)

RE: It won't prompt me for draawing template

The thread didn't earn a star, SBaughs post did for:-
1) giving the correct answer.
2) spending his valuable time to make the screen capture video to clarify the problem.

Stars are given by members who want to say "Thankyou" for the good tips & help they receive from the posts. (see bottom left corner of each post ... "Thank ???? for this valuable post"

"YOu're idea is stupid!"

"No YOU'RE stupid!!"

etc etc...

And it's a mountain biking forum...
