Need help with opto-interrupt switch

Need help with opto-interrupt switch

Need help with opto-interrupt switch

(OP)
Hi all,

I am using a 12vdc power supply (15.5vdc measured).  I would like to use it to drive THIS optical interrupt switch which would then trigger THIS solid state relay (G3VM-2).

1)  Are these two components nicely compatible?
2)  If they are compatible, how do I wire them up and what other stuff would i need?
3)  Am I even asking my question in the right forum?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

RE: Need help with opto-interrupt switch

This sort of opto "switch" is a pain because you need to do analog design work to get it to work. If you are not good at analog stuff then use an opto with a schmitt trigger digital output. This does the thinking for you. The logic output will then more readily interface to other stuff. The key problem area is switching speed.

Let’s look at the photo-transistor version, -031. You put 20mA into the LED and get 0.3mA out. Now 0.3mA x 1K only gives 0.3V swing. If you put the resistor up to 20K to get a reasonable output swing the delay will increase from the 15µs quoted for a 1k load resistance, probably by a factor or 20x.
