Converting AutoCAD model to SW?

Converting AutoCAD model to SW?

Converting AutoCAD model to SW?

(OP)
Hi,
I'll start this by saying I have VERY limited experience in SolidWorks. My company has been all AutoCAD forever. We have not yet started training on SW so bear with my ignorance. :)

We are doing a project in which we have created an AutoCAD model, but our client needs to be able to bring them into Pro/E.  I have tried to import the AutoCAD model into SW but only get a few of the components actually convert successfully. Any ideas?

Also I was able to join the components in the model, save as STL, bring it into SW, and it came in nicely, as one piece. But then when I try to export as a .step or Pro/E file, it says the geometry is not recognized and I get an empty file.

Thanks...
She-ME

What formats can you export from Acad?

I can export to: .wmf, .stl, .sat, .eps, .3ds

When I tried to bring the .dwg model directly into SW, it only brought in SOME of the components. But not all. So not sure if there could be bad geometry in the .dwg file... SW doesn't seem to give me enough info when it errors on the import.

Thanks!

If the ACAD files are solids, save them as ACIS (.sat) files.  Then in SolidWorks, go to Open and change "File of type" to ACIS (.sat)

I second that.

Thanks -- that worked! It gave me a few errors, so I will have to see if some parts didn't come through. But it looks like they all did.

Thanks for your help! :)
