Standards for Threads on drawings

Standards for Threads on drawings

(OP)
I have been searching the net for the most widely accepted standards for showing threads on drawings but no luck.  Can someone point me in the right direction where to find this type of information.  I went to the ANSI site but I can not justify purchasing a subscription to answer one or two question.  This and tolerancing standards on drawings are the only two things we are disputing here.  Some say that actual threads should be shown in cluding the aux views and others say that the dashed line designating a threaded feature is sufficient.  The other thing we are a bit confused about is what happens when you have an assembly of components that have interlocking internal and external threads.  If the solid assembly has actual threads then the section view would as well.
Thanks

RE: Standards for Threads on drawings

Showing actual threads is not necessary. Neither is modelling them. All you need is dashed lines with a callout. The only time you will need threads is if you have a detail to show how to machine a custom thread or modify one. Sometimes it is needed if going to some type of 3D printer. You should have copies of drafting standards, mostly ASME Y14.5.

RE: Standards for Threads on drawings

If you dont want to purchase a subscription to ansi find a school that teaches drafting practices and purchase the text book on pertains to ASME Y14.5. You may also be able to find one on the subject at the library or book store, Also you can purchase the book from places other than ansi.
