Vessel vacuum rating

Is there an equation(s) to calculate the external pressure (or internal vacuum) of a non-ASME atmospheric tank?

I need this to properly size a vacuum breaker as a backup safety to a nitrogen blanketing system.

RE: Vessel vacuum rating

Assuming a tank geometry within the scope of something like Sec. VIII, Div. 1 I would think you could use those design rules for rating your tank. If you know all tank dimensions and material, it is fairly straightforward. I don't know of any other "pencil and paper" method.

RE: Vessel vacuum rating

I believe Roark includes a formula for buckling pressure of a cylindrical shell.  Similar equations are used in API and AWWA tank codes.

Thanks-I will try to obtain Roark's equations for stress & strain.
