Threaded Pipe Installation

Threaded Pipe Installation

Threaded Pipe Installation

(OP)
Where can I find the minimum and maximum installation torque for NPT threaded pipe?  Is there a pipe-fitters manual somewhere?  I need this for the design of the threaded body/adapter joint on our threaded-end ball valves.

RE: Threaded Pipe Installation

I don't know if there's a standard or not, but I'd suggest a higher design torque level than that.

If I were able to fracture your valve with the amount of torque I could exert through a good pipe wrench's teeth, with a handle of arbitrary length, without stripping the outside surface off the pipe, I'd speak ill of your valve.

RE: Threaded Pipe Installation

Check the "Piping And Fluid Mechanics Engineering" forum for thread 378-5045 "Torque For NPT Connections". Measured torque doesn't come into play, for a variety of reasons.

RE: Threaded Pipe Installation

Threaded fittings do not necessarily coincide with pipe wrenches.  I often buy hex nipples or threaded fittings with wrench flats.
