Multiple Solidworks Directories

Multiple Solidworks Directories

Multiple Solidworks Directories

(OP)
Hello All,

I have been looking at different user's machines and noticed that some users have several solidworks directories and some do not. The multiple directories are typically found on the C:\Program Files\.

Does anyone know of a way of putting the structure back to one folder without having to do a re-install?

The reason is because one user's system in particular has multiple directories with partial data in each. For example he has a couple Solidworks directories that have the Toolbox.ini file in each directory. I have changed both files but Toolbox still behaves badly.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best Regards,
Jon

RE: Multiple Solidworks Directories

If you are talking about the SW install directories then no you will have to reinstall. if you are talking about file location then those can be controlled by the users.

The reason you get multiple directories like that is because SW was installed more then once and the original directory wasn't removed. Just because you uninstall doesn't mean Windows removes it from the HDD too. One reason is because there is data in there that you customize and it doesn't delete it for your benefit.

Anytime you have to reinstall remove the data at least from the HDD if not from the regsitry to (See FAQ's on details). Then when installing give it a name... C:\Program\Files\Solidworks05

To clean up the system I would uninstall SW and remove all directories then reinstall... because how can you be sure which SW is which at this point on the HDD?

RE: Multiple Solidworks Directories

Just noticing this thread now, as I also have multiple SW directories. I believe the second one occured during my upggrade to SP4.

The original directory still has all the files in it (not just customized data). I renamed the directory, and ran SW and everything was good, so I can delete the renamed directory. If it had of giving me errors, I would have renamed it back.

RE: Multiple Solidworks Directories

Sometimes a decent registry cleaner is useful for the uninstalls before reinstalling as well.  So you remove things from the hard drive after the uninstall, reboot, clean the registry, reboot, and install the new stuff into particular directories.

Remember to change the path of the shared directory as well.  There are two directories to control in any given SW installation--so pay attention when installing, and indicate the SW version in your directory name to keep things straight.  I'm running SW 05 and 06 concurrently on the same machine with no problems at all.

RE: Multiple Solidworks Directories

Jeff,

I agree with you regarding cleaning the registry, but.... my SW updates automatically, after we upgrade the server. So I don't have the ability to do an uninstall and re-install. I'm not sure why, but half our computers have 1 SW directory, and half have 2.

RE: Multiple Solidworks Directories

That is probably because you picked the Wrong file to install with. You have to choose setup up and you will get one directory, if you you chose the *.msi file then it made a second directory.

You will have to uninstall (See FAQ here on this process) and clean out hte registry to remove the second folder. You will need admin rights.
