steel "laid off"?

steel "laid off"?

steel "laid off"?

(OP)
I see the following sentence in a specification:

"Rolled material must meet this straightness requirement before being laid off or worked."

What's "laid off"?  Or is this an error and it should have been "laid out"?  Does "laid out" make sense in this context?

RE: steel "laid off"?

Think about the lay of a rope or cable.

sorry...once again I'm realizing how many assumptions I'm making.

Rolled material in this case is I-beams.

This use of words is unusual, however to be laid off means to be made redundant ie. you are out of work, or not working, or not being worked. In this case the rolled material is either worked or not worked after passing the straightness test. Clearly someone from management school has chosen the words 'laid off'.

I've been assuming it's a typo for "laid out" but wanted to make sure "laid off" wasn't some ironworking term I'd missed along the way before I go have legal documents changed.  The intended meaning of the sentence is "straighten the material out before you do stuff to it", where "laid off" (or "laid out"?) is part of "stuff".

I've seen use of 'Laid off' in the sense of 'Marked out' but can't find an example to hand.

Good Luck

I recently came across another spec that had "laid out or worked" (various state specs stole a lot of their language from a single source).  So I'm feeling pretty secure about the "laid out", which is the same as "marked out", no?
