I'm looking for some easy reading on the
subject of manipulating crystal structures
in steel alloys, via magnetic fields.
I'm having a difficult time sorting out
the good from the not so good.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Jerry

Look up magnetic stirring on continuous casters.  Some caster manufacturers like SMS-Demag may have some info on their website.

There is a book titled "Alloying" which describes how the ferromagnetic BCC phase in steel results from the need for the 3d energy level electrons of adjacent atoms to keep away from impinging on each other ( the Pauli exclusion principle). This results in the FCC austenite becoming unstable below the Curie temperature and the BCC structure with greater interatomic spacing becoming more stable. This allows the 3d magnetic vectors to align. Changing imposed magnetic fields shifts the temperature at which this occurs.
