i have developed and patented a dual surface scraped heat exchanger especially designed for high viscous liquids.
The flow annulus can be as little 4-5 mm wide and instead of turning the inner cylinder 360° it reciprocate 90° back and forth pushing the product in and out between the longitudinal scrapers(4 on each surface) mounted in grooves on the inner and outer surface. This prevents the product from being transported around the anulus in a laminar flow pattern and instead introduces turbulence to the product as it flow through the heat exchanger.
The machine is being tested at the technical university of denmark this summer along wiht a larger system that allows the product to be pushed back and forth through the heat exchanger and a mixer head. We have up to 35 bar pressure to force the product through the system and can thus handle products with very high viscousit
we are looking for ideas of products to test.

Just out of curiosity, where is the cooling fluid flowing, inside the inner reciprocating/rotating cylinder or outside the outer pipe, or perhaps on both sides ?

the h/e is designed to handle food products but where the apv or alfalaval h/e tends to rotate the product with the scrapers my machine actually push the product from side to side as it flows through the vessel. this i belive will give much more turbulance and thus better heat transfer.
on top of this it has dually /heated and scraped surfaces.
the h/e has a very strong scraper system which will allow the product to become extremely viscous as it moves through the vessel. i am looking for products like liqourice, gum etc where heat transfer becomes difficult because of increased viscosity.

I used to work for a large Confectionary company in the United Kingdom, whilst doing my apprenticship one of the regular chores was stripping and rebuilding the scraped surface exchangers, a horrible job.

What is the maximum volumetric capacity do you consider practical?

thank you for your interest in the scraped surface heat exchanger.
we consider 200°c so far to be the upper limit.
our pilot plant is designed for 35 bar pressure but we will go higher in production versions should it be neccessary.
the internal volume of the pilot unit is only 2 liters with 5mm annullus gap, but keep in mind that the product in our set up can flow in both directions (appro. one cycle a minut). Initials test will have a batch volume of approx. 40 liters. This volume will be forced through the h/e, then returned and cycled as many times it is neccessary to heat or cool to spec.
