Need phase diagram

Need phase diagram

Need phase diagram

(OP)
I'm looking for a phase diagram for n-butane.  I've searched the web and had no luck.  I'm a mechanical engineer, so I don't have all the reference books that you chem guys probably have.  Can anybody share this with me or point me to the right book which I may find at the library.

Thanks,

Timelord

RE: Need phase diagram

Timelord:

By a "phase" diagram, I presume you mean a Mollier Diagram (or a "T-S" diagram) where the thermodynamic properties are plotted together with the identification of the saturated vapor, liquid, and solid states.  If so, then get a copy of the GPSA Engineering Data Book.  You'll find an electronic version (on CD) for purchase through the InterNet.

You can also find the n-Butane Mollier Diagram on p. 341 of "ASHRAE Thermodynamic Properties of Refrigerants"; R.B. Stewart, R.T. Jacobsen, & S.G. Penoncello; ASHRAE; 1986.

The above information is where you find the diagrams.  If what you really are after is the Thermodynamic data itself, then I recommend you go to:

http://webbook.nist.gov/chemistry/fluid/

where you'll find all the Thermo data you'll ever need on Butane.  In fact, you'll find the complete Thermo data for 33 other compounds - and its all FREE.

I hope the above information helps you out.

Thanks Montemayor,

I will check out the references you have given me.  I am trying to build a small reflux solvent washer and n-butane is the solvent I need.  I only need the phase diagram to get an idea of the temperatures needed on the hot and cold ends to get it to reflux.
Thanks again.

RE: Need phase diagram

The phase diagram for n-butane can be calculated via the extended Antoine equation, using the parameters below:

Antoine equation: Log10(P)=(A)+(B/T)+(C)Log10(T)+(DT)+(ET^2)
Where
A = 2.7044E+01
B = -1.9049E+03
C = -7.1805E+00
D = -6.6845E-11
E = 4.2190E-06
T = temperature in ºK.

These parameters are valid for n-butane across the temperature range of 135ºK to 425ºK. The resultant pressure value (P) will be in the units of Torr.

This data came from Handbook of Vapor Pressure, Volume 4, Dr. Carl L. Yaws, Gulf Publishing Company, 1994.
