ACAD 2005 - Unable to deleting objects

(OP)
I am working in autocad 2005. I try to delete objects and nothing happens. I mark an object and right click but the programme doesnt recognise that the object is selected.  However when I open it in 2002 everything works.

Is there a system variable which controls the selection of objects.

I also note that when I select an object in the drawing the layers pulldown list does not respond by telling me which layer its on.

Set PICKADD to Auto, PICKFIRST to 1
