Hydrogen Cyanide destruction

Hydrogen Cyanide destruction

Hydrogen Cyanide destruction

(OP)
We are currently considering a carbonization run on an induction heated furnace.  The process gas is Nitrogen flowing at approximately 200 SCFH. One of the most significant byproducts is Hydrogen Cyanide HCN.

I'm looking for the best method to destroy HCN.  If an incinerator or thermal oxydizer is used,  What would be the temperature required for the incineration of HCN and what would be the retention time?

Any help will be appreciated.

RE: Hydrogen Cyanide destruction

200 scfh?  Not very much flow.  And sounds like you're not doing this often either.  Your stream is hot and will need to be cooled, but if you can come up with a way to intimately contact your stream with conventional bleach (sodium hypochlorite solution) you'll destroy the cyanide.  Depending on the levels of cyanide you might get away with anything from a bubble column to a couple of spray nozzles to a packed column.
