Pressure drop and noise/vibration

Pressure drop and noise/vibration

(OP)
HI,

Does anyone have information regarding the relation between orifice diameter and noise generaton for water flow through perfurated plates inside pipes? I need to impose a pressure drop of 3 bar for water flow through a pipe, for a flowrate of 10 l/min and low noise/vibration is a critical issue.

RE: Pressure drop and noise/vibration

Noise and vibration associated with pressure drop are simply a function of fluid velocity. Therefore you must aim to achieve the lowest economically feasible velocity. You do not indicate you pipe size, so I have no starting point. Try to achieve a flow of less than 1 m/s and silence will be your reward.

RE: Pressure drop and noise/vibration

peterpom,
thanks for your rule of thumb it is helpful.  somehwat related question, would that same rule of thumb apply to gaseous fluids (like natural gas)?  or is there some other parameter that determines an acceptable fluid flow to minimize noise?

Thanks for your suggestion. The pipe diameter is about 30mm, which means the mean approach velocity is 0.25 m/s.
By the way, Idel´Cik formulas to computed pressure loss.

Dear peterpom,

You have given a basic picture, just read below one of the conditions we are facing.

We are reducing steam from 6 ata 200°C to 0.7 ata 80°C thro a venturi of 250 dia 400mm long and it is let into 1600mm dia duct 8.5M long and into 2800mm dia duct.

We find that the velocity at the exit of the venturi is about 150 m/s What is your opinion.

hi

is there any sites give a bisic information regarding machinary vibration,
