How is the allowable stress of a bolt determined?

RE: How is the allowable stress of a bolt determined?

That's too general of a question.  Are you a student?

RE: How is the allowable stress of a bolt determined?

No, just trying to brush up on bolt sizing.  I'm using two M6 bolts (grade 10.9) for a bracket.  I want to make sure the bracket will break before the bolts.  What do I need to consider?

RE: How is the allowable stress of a bolt determined?

Consider:

geometry: bolt shank diameters (threaded, unthreaded, etc.)

forces: bolt pretension, applied external forces

material: allowable tension and shear stresses (see ISO 898-1)

This is a start...

Cory

Hi Scanhead,
Also, check out Machinery's Handbook, 25th ed pp.1400-1416.

Yes Machiniery's Handbook is good.  Referred to it today in fact.

Another excellent source is Tool and Manufacturing Engineering Handbook.
