Theoretical question: Given a column of wood subjected to an axial load which would eventually cause "crumpling" (multiple shear failures), would the column be more resistant to the crumpling if already constructed in that crumpled shape? That is, I guess, the original column is largely subjected to compression while the crumpled has both compressive and tensile forces acting. Any references gratefully received.

Definitely not. reaching of crumpled status requires energy consumption. Difference between the two shape's resistances is exactly the upmentioned deformation energy
