Can 60HZ Industrial Transformers Be Used With 50Hz?
Can 60HZ Industrial Transformers Be Used With 50Hz?
(OP)
Many of the specifications (Hevi-Duty, Acme) I have looked at specifically say 60 Hz operation only. However, postings on this site indicate that if the input voltage is reduced by 5/6, it is perfectly fine to use them at 50 Hz. Theoretically , it is plausible but are there any other things to look out for? I'm just a yankee that has never used anything but 60 Hz. Thanks

RE: Can 60HZ Industrial Transformers Be Used With 50Hz?
Exception to this are smaller units (~under 2 kVA) designed typically with large core, may be capable to operate either at 60Hz or 50Hz. However, always consult with the transformer manufacturer before any final decision.
Due to the diversity of transformer design, is hard to made a generic recommendation regarding derating for frequency.
For new installations, derating for frequency is not recommended since manufacturers are able to provide almost any voltage rating for additional charges. For existing conditions and if the derating is absolutely necessary, consult with the manufacturer regarding derating possibility.
