Very large universal joint

Very large universal joint

Very large universal joint

(OP)
Hey folks

Are there anyone who knows where to find a universal joint or hooks joint that can transmit up to 19.1 Mega Newton meters. Or 169 million in.lbs. I know its a very large moment but please help me....

RE: Very large universal joint

That's not unheard of. What are your other operational requirements? speed, durability, cost, that sort of thing?

Cheers

Greg Locock

The speeds range from 6-15 rpm, and there has to be a Dynamic amplification factor of 1.3. The whole setup has to drive on full load in about 3000 hours, and half load in 18000 hours.

RE: Very large universal joint

That's quite a powerful motor, out of my league, what articulation angle are you after? How much maintenance?

And what cost?

Cheers

Its a 12 MW electric motor and a gear that reduces the speed with i=1:125. The angles are max 8 degrees wich should be divided in two universal joints. The maintance is about every 500 hours.

RE: Very large universal joint

I think what you need is a large double engagement gear coupling.  There are a number of manufacturers that should be able to do the job.

RE: Very large universal joint

Dana-Convel Corp located in Columbia South Carolina designed and built a 1 million in-lbf CV joint for a company that I used to work for.  I think the angle was 9 degrees.  The design was good but they had some heat treat problems that I helped to rectify.

There Convel facility did not have large enough machinery to manufacture the joint so they subcontracted it to a tool and die shop in Detroit, Michigan where Dana-Convel used to be located.

Dana-Convel also are the leading suppliers of aftermarket automobile CV joints.

RE: Very large universal joint

These people do big ones for steel mills ect, they also do the gearboxes.  If this is steel roll out you will need the special bellows ect for heat.  I think one of the engineers is Scott Gardner.

RE: Very large universal joint

You would think with the speed that slow, dynamics and balancing wouldn't really be issues, in which case you can build it up out of welded steel components- in which case you just need to located large bearings for the ends, right?  And you can lower the forces on those bearings by making the unit physically bigger?

RE: Very large universal joint

Good point, and work with your steel supplier, before deciding how much you have to build up.

A long time ago, Ryerson flame- cut some u-joint yokes for me out of 7" plate.  With a little Bondo, they looked pretty decent.  Still in service as far as I know.

Check with Voith-you may have to do a google search-I think they are in Europe-they make a lot of spindle and ujoint assemblies for large rolling mill applications.  Maytag
