The best reference for cabling is....?

The best reference for cabling is....?

The best reference for cabling is....?

(OP)
Dear Cabling gurus

I’ve been using Pro/E since 1992 and have an enormous amount of experience with large assemblies, especially at project start-up.

Recently I’ve taught myself how to use Pro/CABLING and although I haven’t had formal training, I have spoken to a PTC specialist who recommended shrinkwrapping as the best way to reference assembles for cabling.

I’ve always regarded shrinkwrapping as very gimmicky, and should the design change, references would be lost, just like deleting parts from assemblies.  Also, shrinkwrapping doesn’t copy centrelines that are particularly useful for routing, and perhaps most importantly they become one un-manageable ‘lump’.

I prefer to route cables in reference assemblies – I work in a high-level assembly containing a cabling assembly containing the harness(es).  I use simplified reps to keep the assembly light and fast, and do make references through the high-level assembly.  Of course we always recommend avoiding such dependencies, but with Pro/CABLING, there seems to be no uncompromised solution.

Does anybody have any better suggestions, or is their any written recommendation from either PTC or another consultancy organisation?

Best regards

RE: The best reference for cabling is....?

I would think a Skeleton model as the best way to track reference planes and other critical interfaces.  This would be key for cabling.  Shrinkwrap is for sharing data with customers or other facilities that utilize your designs.
