Genset Automatic Voltage Regulator
Genset Automatic Voltage Regulator
(OP)
Hello,
Im interested to build up my own Automatic Voltage Regulator for my Diesel Driven AC Generator,Is there anybody who can give me a diagram or refer a website in which I can get an information regarding AC Generator Field Excitation Control.
Let say,the AVR I need must be suitable to excite a generator field for continous rating of 4.0 amps at 60vdc.Generator capacity is 400KVA,3phase,380Vac,50Hz.
Thanks for any assistance,I really appreciate the people in this great site who shares their knowledge and help to everybody.
Best Regards
Serb

Thanks for your concern for any unwanted consequences that might occur in operating such big capacity generator in an experimented AVR.
I understand that safety is the uppermost thing to be considered at all times hence independent safety monitor gadgets were installed at the generator to isolate the excitation supply from the AVR in case anything goes wrong, and ofcourse a simulation test of AVR itself is necessary.
Im still trying to find out a web site where I can get an idea of building up a basic generator excitation circuit regardless of Generator capacity.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

But!!! If you persist I would personally design a microprocessor based controller as it would allow a lot of flexibility as you learn your way along. It might also be able to provide some of the many other niggling control tasks required besides the straight voltage control. The Microchip PIC processors run fast enough and if you really need the hussle their PICDSP series is specifically designed for things like motor control, AC-Drive type applications.
Good Luck... be careful... one hand in the pocket.. wear saftey glasses!

But if you are talking about something to excite the main field of the generator, this is NOT a voltage regulator, this would termed an EXCITER. Most diesel generators have a rotating brushless exciter. The external AVR supplies dc voltage to the field of the exciter, not the main field.
The AVR generally only needs to put out few amps. You will need a way to measure the generator output voltage and feedback that voltage to the AVR.
If you need to operate the generator in parallel with another source (generator, utility) you will also need some means of droop control to allow the generator to share the reactive power demands of your system with the other source.
Good luck.
