I have a question about tension cracks or displacement cracking (fault) that may occur on an angle of approximately 45 degrees from the a sulfur production areain the caprock of a salt dome. If one has a case of trough subsidence, is the zone of maxium strain the area where on would anticipate surface expressions of faulting verses an area that is much further away and on an angle of 45 degrees? It would seem to me that the area where tension and compression are beginning to offset is the area that one would expect the maximum amount of strain. There are a few documented cases where a fault appeared during mining of sulfur on the up dip side of the cap rock but none on the down dip side. Perhaps the orientation of the caprock might have something to do with it.
