Recovery of Carburised parts

Recovery of Carburised parts

Recovery of Carburised parts

(OP)
Good afternoon,

Your assistance in a heat-treatment problem would be appreciated. I have some parts, the basic shape of which are 2.5mm thick by 125mm diameter discs. The material is en36c. They have been carburised and unfortunately have distorted beyond our grinding allowance. Originally, they were machined from a piece of bar and in hindsight we should have carried out a stress relieve after rough machining. However, we would like to make use of these parts and was wondering whether they could be recovered. Therefore is it possible they could be a given a stress relieve treatment while being constrained flat and then re-quenched and tempered? Are you able to tell me will the desired case be recovered

Thanks in advance for your assistance

RE: Recovery of Carburised parts

If you have a quench press available you could try re-austenitizing the parts and then press quenching. With a controlled atmosphere during the re-heating process to prevent surface decarburization and on parts this thin (2.5-mm) which would require very little time to re-heat you should not change the case depth significantly. In any case I suspect that you will have to sacrifice a few pieces as test samples anyway so you can prove out the rework on actual parts.

RE: Recovery of Carburised parts

How tight are you right now on your O.D. tolerance? What type of furnaces do you have for a proposed stress relief? What kind of austenitize and quench facilities do you have?
