Reattaching dangling dimensions

Reattaching dangling dimensions

Reattaching dangling dimensions

(OP)
Is it possible to reattach a dangling dimension in the drawing sheet with SW2004?  For example: A block is dimensioned with an overall length and the end is cut off.  Typically this would result in a dangling dimension within the drawing.  We come across this quite often and have seen it done in 2005 but I can't find an option to do it in either 2005 or 2004.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

Just drag & drop the dimension attachment point to the new location.

When trying that all it does is move the length of the extension lines

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

Hmmm ... this is crazy (or I am) ... I did this less than 3 weeks ago on another machine, but cannot do it now on mine.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

(OP)
That's why i thought maybe there was a setting that i was missing but i can't find one.  We just went through a 'Preventing/Repairing Rebuild Errors' class last night and they were moving the dangling dimensions in 2005.  We thought maybe it was a 2005 option but we can't perform the task on our 2005 test machine.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

I have not been able to do this since SW2003. I turned in at beginning of 04 release, but still nothing. Need everyone to turn it in.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

OK, I'm not going crazy (debateable). I was trying to re-attach a non sketch-related dimension. If your dimensions are manually placed on a drawing view, you are SOL! You cannot re-attach those. Delete & replace.

CBL, but it won't work the same on a dwg sheet...

OK ... then I must be going crazy ... I thought I had done this in a drawing just a while ago.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

This is an issue with Reference/dimensions.  It works with driving dimensions.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

(OP)
This is actually an issue with drawing sheets and not the acutal model or its dimensions.  Therefore reference or driving dimensions don't make a difference.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

For what it's worth, you can reattach ordinate dimensions.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

(OP)
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reattach the dangling dimensions in the example that I posted?

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

What are you trying to reattach them to? The example you posted doesn't show any new feature!

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

Yes, delete them and re-dimension.

Try importing model items, per feature if necessary.

Otherwise, try to dim edges that do not change (bottom of your block instead of the top, etc.) if this is a standard type part.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

(OP)
Deleting and redimensioning can become a hassle.  I know that other software packages allow this simple operation to be performed and I saw our VAR perform it last night.  But I can't seem to replicate it in our office.  Maybe a call to our VAR is in order.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

(OP)
CBL...In that example there isn't anything that would technically need to be redimensioned.  In larger parts there is a possibility that there is a feature that needs dimensioned that is close by and a simple drag & drop would speed things up considerably.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

So add a feature (say, a hole) & try it.

tried it...doesn't work.  Oh well, maybe next time...

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

Did you add the feature in the same sketch as the dimensions? If not it will not work.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

(OP)
Tried it both ways (same sketch and different sketch).  Still no avail...guess the simple delete and redimension will have to work for now.

If you want just make a block with a simple cut-extrude feature, goto new drawing and dimension the extrude.  save both, the drawing and the part.  close the drawing.  Delete the cut-extrude and sketch, save and close the part.  Open the drawing and your dimensions will be dangling.  See if you can reattach them to any of the edges.

Our VAR was able to do it last night in 2005 so we figured it was a 2005 option.  I tested it on our machine here that has 2005 and no luck.  So I am assuming that it is an option somewhere but I can't find it.  During the brief class that we had last night, our VAR was mentioning that you click on a red box to reattach references and dimensions but I don't see any red boxes.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

Send your file to your var and see if they can reatach the dimensions. If they can they need to help you through this.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

Wonder if this can be done via the API. UG has a nice function for reattaching dimensions and I wonder if it can be programmed in through the API.

RE: Reattaching dangling dimensions

I used to have this problem but since 2005 sp3 came out I have no problems reattaching dims.  Simply drag to new location and look for pointer icon feedback and release.
