Parallel port on PC

Parallel port on PC

Parallel port on PC

(OP)
Quick easy question - it's quicker for me to ask than to dig out a buzzer and bell it out.

Does a standard parallel printer ("Centronics") cable have any sort of 'cross' in it?  I want to plug a dongle into the back of my PC, and I'm getting a bit sick of ratting around the back of the box every time I want to remove it.  (I share it with somebody else).  So I had a brainwave - keep the cable permanently plugged in, and just plug the dongle into the cable.  But if there are any x-overs, this won't work...

RE: Parallel port on PC

Any DB25 extender cable that really has 25 wires inside will work.  I'm saying this because there are DB25 extender cables for serial cables, and these only have seven wires.

RE: Parallel port on PC

Shopping tip - Normal 'Centronics' printer cables, 6-foot, intended for PC to printer, are only Cdn$2.00 (about US$1.65 ) at the local bargain stores. They've got every wire, are shielded, and appear to be of good contruction quality. I mention this only because some places still ask as much as Cdn$30 for a similar cable.

RE: Parallel port on PC

A word of warning!

I have had problems with dongles not working when placed at the far end of an extender cable.

On the other hand, I do currently work fine with three different dongles after each other and then a printer cable out the back of my PC.

RE: Parallel port on PC

Most standard 'centronics' printer cables have different connectors on each end. The PC end is normally a 25-way D-type (which most dongles will fit). The other end is a 'Centronics' propritory connector

Good Luck

RE: Parallel port on PC

Just make a flat ribbon cable assemnly with the required sex DB25 connectors at each end for a couple of bucks.
