3 Phase Generator Flashing

3 Phase Generator Flashing

3 Phase Generator Flashing

(OP)
I have an engine drive 22kw induction generator, commercially made, which will not generate any voltage.  It has been flashed while turning at rated speed and above with 12 and 24 vdc without results.  The generator has been removed for the engine and been flashed with the 12 vdc which has pulled the rotor to the field coils.  After assembly the unit still does not produce voltage.  All help is appreciated.
Thanks
Dials

RE: 3 Phase Generator Flashing

How do you flash an induction generator? Induction machines typically require that they are connected to an existing AC source before they can function as a generator. Have you actually got a synchronous machine? Is the rotor wound and fitted with either brushgear or a shaft-mounted rectifier?

You could post this in the electric power engineering forum for a better response. Mention the double posting if you do - multiple threads are hard to keep track of and frustrate people!

RE: 3 Phase Generator Flashing

Do you have an excitation system? There is more to getting this going other than flashing the field.

ScottyUK,
Thanks for the reply, I have been on a steep learning curve for this generator. In my area no one is familiar with induction generators.
The rotor has neither brushes, sliprings, coils or rectifier circuitry.  This was learned when the unit was dissembled.  What is needed to make this unit function as a stand a lone generator?
I will post also in the Engineering Forum.

buzzp,
Thanks for the reply.
I have no excitation system and would apprecitate any help in getting this system running as a stand a lone generator.
Dials.

RE: 3 Phase Generator Flashing

First I want to make it clear that I am no expert on engine driven generators. It is not clear whether you have a synchronous generator or not. Is there any mfg or part numbers on any of the equipment?

It sounds as though you do not have a synchronous piece of equipment if you cant find any of the obvious associated with synchronous generators.

RE: 3 Phase Generator Flashing

Dials,

Most of my expertise is with large synchronous generators, so I hope that there may be someone with greater knowledge of small machines than me reading this. From your description your machine certainly sounds like an induction generator. I'm sorry that I don't know of any simple way to make an induction machine act as a stand-alone generator, because they inherently rely on an external 3-phase source for their excitation. They don't have any inherent ability to raise or control terminal voltage in the way that a synchronous machine can.
