weld joint calculation

(OP)
I have a diagonal brace (channel 4"x8"x0.5"thk) working in compression, but for dimensional restrictions for to put inside the painting room we need to cut the brace 10 " away from one end, and after weld again the brace with no plate in middle just channel to channel weld, how can I analize the strehght of the weld?

Thanks.

RE: weld joint calculation

Your description is somewhat confusing to read. Are you intending to cut the brace, use it for an application and weld a piece back on to restore the length for re-use, with no center web?

If so don't bother to analyze this attachment - it is a not recommended repair. As a minimum, you would want to install a replacement channel that is full penetration welded to assure adequate strength in tension and compression.

Do yourself a favor and purchase a replacement channel of the original length.
