Personal Air Sampling

Personal Air Sampling

(OP)
I am after some information on the method of Air sampling.

We have a process where we can conduct both inhalable and respirable dust sampling. I am a bit confused on the subject of using a cyclone and the 50% cut-off point, doe sthat mean to get an accurate sample you would have to have the ability of determining particle size? or do you double the figure you get on re-weighing  or do you just accept that this happens and its factored into tthe exposure limits.

RE: Personal Air Sampling

A cyclone is used to measure repirable dust.  When using a cyclone make sure that you have the pump set to the proper flow.  Cyclones are calibrated to a certain flow rate.

The way a cyclone is used for respirable dust is it spins the air/dust entering like a cyclone dropping the large particles out of the air stream.  Those larger particles would not be able to be inhaled into the human body.  After using the cyclone take the bottom cap off to clean it out and you can see what is left.

Inhalable and respriable dust are the same thing as far as I know.  Did you mean Total Dust and Respirable Dust?  I am also not sure what you are referring to as the 50% cut off point.

There may be an IH on line that could better answer these questions.

RE: Personal Air Sampling

Check out NIOSH method 600 for respirable dust and NIOSH method 500 for total dust.
