Food Safe Dye Penetrant Testing

Food Safe Dye Penetrant Testing

Food Safe Dye Penetrant Testing

(OP)
Hello all,

Please could someone tell me if they know of any food safe dye penetrant kits/chemicals.  We carry out significant NDT activities on food processing equipment, and would prefer to use a food approved product rather than rely on very careful cleaning of tested components.

Many thanks

Francis.

RE: Food Safe Dye Penetrant Testing

I have seen Fluorescein used in testing, and it is human injectable (makes you skin glow yellow under blacklight).
Off hand I don't know of any NDT kit using it, but for water based fluorcent testing it should be doable.

RE: Food Safe Dye Penetrant Testing

I would try mixing DI water with Food Grade Red 17 or Yellow 3, as the penetrant and a fine bleach wheat flour powder as the developer.  Clean with Water.

RE: Food Safe Dye Penetrant Testing

Hmm, good ideas.  Are there ways to "qualify" dye penetrant techniques - i.e. can you buy a "calibrated crack" somewhere?

RE: Food Safe Dye Penetrant Testing

Yes there are "calibrated cracks" available. They are usually required on checks done to standards. See site below. For food safe dye penetrate, this company would know which product to use.

EdStainless,
You get a big red star.  'Bout split a gut!

And then the calibrated cracks question.  Cracked me up (sorry Jimbo).  And an answer too and a legit answer to boot or I hope so assuming it is not a bogus link.

RE: Food Safe Dye Penetrant Testing

Thanks,  Your urine looks like antifreeze for two days also.  They injected me to look at blood flow in my eyes.

The claibrated crack blocks are usually Al alloys that have been quenched to cause cracking.  You can get them for various sensitivities.
