Joint/Member Naming conventions
Joint/Member Naming conventions
(OP)
Does anyone use a standard naming convention for joint or member generation? I'm really tired of seeing member #138 and having to look at a map to see where member #138 is at. I really wish REI would allow us to use characters so that member #138 could become column B5.

RE: Joint/Member Naming conventions
In order to keep track to some degree of the nodes and member numbers I tend to divide my numbering systen into floor levels. Say ground level nodes numbered 1 to 99, first floor level 100 to 199, second floor 200 to 299 etc.
The members can be numbered in the same way. I then generally number the columns using a higher number range so that I don't confuse beam and column members
I find that this helps, particularly when dealing with a large analysis file.
