We source some components from overseas vendors for international builds (same products made here and abroad) and have run into issues on availability on AISI steels in certain countries.  Currently we are looking at using EN36C as an alternate for 4820 for a pinion shaft (which brought up the question) but a good cross reference would be nice for other projects.

You should be aware that the designation En36C is old and comes from withdrawn standards. Most steels in Europe at least should be determined by the appropriate EN or EN ISO standards. I agree with EdStainless that a good handbook is essential - I personally wouldn't rely on information published on websites, but have found some useful for initial searches:
