Surface finish for SS316L

(OP)
It would be helpful if anyone could let me know what are the acceptable Limits for the surface finish for SS316 pipes used in the pharmaceutical industry. These pipes will be used to transfer sterile products and the suppliers suggest Ra 5-9 but what is the requirements laid out by the FDA?

RE: Surface finish for SS316L

stainless steel, type 316 included, can be to less than the 5-9Ra you mention. type 316 heat exchanger flat rolled stock has been produced to Ra's in the 2 to 4 ( microinch) neighborhood. This finish is #2 bright annealed. I can recommend seevral suppliers if you wish The FDA stays out of specifying material, but several tubing manufacturers advertise special highly smoothed finishes for semiconductor manufacturing.  MFM304@aol.com
