PCBs

PCBs

(OP)
We have a military base near to me where
they want to burn the buildings that were
painted with high levels of PCBs and they
know that these will turn into dioxins but
the nearest homes are two miles away.
Should I be concerned.  They claim this is
a test and want to burn the other buildings
at the arsenal.

Diamondjim:

I would think the state and federal environmental authorities would havea great deal to say about this, none of which might be to the liking of base personnel!

Out of curiosity, which arsenal are you referring to?

Ravenna Arsenal in Ravenna Ohio.

RE: PCBs

Are you sure they were painted with PCBs?

PCBs were probably too expensive to be used in paint for base housing.

That is what they tell us. It evidently
was typical at the time and someone had
a heavy brush.  Because there are residual
explosives in the building they also must
have a high temperature burn.  They have
lost lives at other sites when trying
to diassemble similar buildings thus the
reason to try another method.  They want
to monitor this as a test site.

RE: PCBs

I don't know what the environmental laws are like where you are, but out here on the West coast, who ever made a serious proposal like that, would be drawn and quartered in the public square. Getting a permit to burn a building for the fire department to practice on is hard enough, but a known haz-mat site, I don't think so. Are these rumors around town, or are these statements that have been published in the local paper?
