Brewery yeast disposal to WWTP

Brewery yeast disposal to WWTP

guys,

Any inputs on the effects of discharging yeast to the wastewater treatment with UASB and aerobic basin. We wont dry anymore the yeast as its not economically feasible presently.

It depends where you are located.  In PA, USA, you will have predischarge limits on critical parameters (in your case, I'm guessing BOD, DO and temp; possibly pH) which will dictate how much you have to pretreat.  These will be set with respect to the existing loadings in the system, as well as the capacity and process at the recieving treatment facility.

Contact the permitting agency, they will probably give you preliminary limits, upon which you can base your design/discharge proposal.

Remember: The Chinese ideogram for “crisis” is comprised of the characters for “danger” and “opportunity.”

Steve,

I am not really concerned about our effluent. My concern is how will the bacteria react with the yeast at the UASB.
    Any additional inputs.

Difficult to say with only the information that you submitted. Are you talking about discharging to your own pretreatment plant or discharging to a municipal plant? Are you asking if you can discharge biodegradable suspended solids?

bmir,

The brewery plant discharges wastes to the wastewater treatment plant including its spent yeast. Previously, it is being dried and sold to buyers. but drying yeast is not economically viable presently. Thus after autolizing the spent yeast, it is directly discharge to the wastewater treatment plant.
     Any advise you can give?

Other than the possible issue of BOD/COD loading restraints. I can't see any reason why your spent yeast couldn't be discharged to the WWTP. If it is bacterially degradable, which it certainly is, it should not create a treatment problem.

As I assume you have spoken about this with the WWTP operator, what do they have to say?

The problem is that too much yeast causes the UASB to overload and a lot of sludge coming out of the settlers and into the next COD removal tank, the aeration basin. Its very ugly to look at the top portion of the UASB thus frequent cleaning has been only the corrective action. If their are any ways wherein we can still discharge spent yeast but minimizing its high COD effect on the reactor.
