Hello!

I've been recently involved in a research project about pad-mounted transformers and their posible surge protection. I knew common Elbow Surge Arresters, but I didn't know those devices called Parking Stand Surge Arresters (Elbow Type). My questions would be the following ones:

- What are they used for?(specifical situations in which they are used instead the common elbow arresters)
- What are the differences between this kind of surge arresters and the common elbow arresters?
- Do you know any website or document where I could learn more about Parking Stand Surge Arresters (Elbow Type) and the common Elbow Arresters?

I would be grateful if you could answer me these important questions.

Parking stand arresters mount on a parking stand and have a bushing interface that accepts a loadbreak bushing.  Elbow arresters are connected to cable and mount on bushings.  The parking stand arrester is female and the elbow arrester is male.  Both do the same thing, but in some applications, you can eliminate the need for a feed-thru bushing.  See http://www.cooperpowercentral.com/Repository/EpicDocs/235681_91.PDF

For redundancy, we open loop feed our underground systems. There will be a normal open point at a transformer or vault. This one location then has two line ends that are reflection points for surges, which is where you want snuff them out. One elbow is normally connected, the other parked; so one elbow arrester is required plus one parking stand. It's not just the transformer insulation we are protecting, but the cable too.
