Submersible Pumps and NEC

(OP)
Can anyone tell me where in the NEC book where GFCI would be required on a submersible pump.  I read Article 680.51 but that refers to pumps for fountains or near pools.  I installed a >1 hp sump pump in a steam pit (190 F inside)) and it seems it would be prone to tripping and cause more harm than good.  We removed the cord and hard-wired it inside a sealed junction box to avoid moisture getting in between the plug and receptacle.  Wouldn't Article 430 apply in this case?  Just supply a local disconnect and no GFI?  Elevator pits do not require GFI if fed from a dedicated receptacle.  If receptacle and plug was eliminated, less chance of accidental shock.  What do you think?

RE: Submersible Pumps and NEC

I believe that once it is hard wired and not for a pool or spa, GF is not required. But if it was plugged in with a cord and socket, it would require GF. Elevator sumps may have separate rules because they are not accessible.
