Brass vs Bronze Valves
Brass vs Bronze Valves
(OP)
I was wondering what the difference would be between a valve with a brass body and a bronze body. Bronze was spec'd but Brass was supplied will this make any difference? All the valves are less than 2 1/2 " in diameter.
Thanks
Thanks

RE: Brass vs Bronze Valves
The bronze materials are generally copper and tin with other possible elements, notably aluminum, iron, lead, zinc and silicon. The typical brass materials are copper and zinc with other possible elements. Zinc is much higher on the galvanic series - right next to activity of magnesium. The concern with brass valve would be selective attack of zinc (de-zincification) in aqueus solutions. If the brass is in a dry vapor service then it would be much less of a concern. A liquid application in hydrocarbons would probably be OK. Brass is cheaper due to the lower cost of zinc, so don't be cheated by a substitution of material.

You should specify your service condition. For water service, brass or bronze may be selected.
