presure design of piping of banch connection

presure design of piping of banch connection

Following a piping code B31.3. "A pipe having a branch connection is weakened by the opening that must be made in it, unless the wall thickness of the pipe is sufficiently in excess of that required to sustain the pressure, it is necessary to provide added reinforcement".

Does that  mean that if we make the choice to choose a tee (or a reduced tee) instead of reinforcing a branch (ring or saddle), we have to choose a tee that take in account the thickness of the ring plus the thickness of the pipe (previously calculated)?

RE: presure design of piping of banch connection

Jthevenet,
No Providing the Tee or reducing tee is to ASME B16.9 or other recognised standard and providing the pipe schedule is the same as the attached piping then no further calcs/requirements are needed for pressure. The attached piping will have been "designed"/selected for the operating conditions and so long as you provide a tee with the same schedule then all will be OK. Forged fittings are made to have the same pressure retaining capability as the same schedule of straight pipe.

i just looked at a specification made by elf and they concider a tee as branch and reinforced it if necessary.
