Actually i've yet to even see the UGS interface. I've got an opportunity to work for a company that uses unigraphics. Ive been on pro/e & solidworks for the past 5yrs. I'd like some insite from the group on the differences and similarities of unigraphics compared to what i've used in the past. Also if there's been experience with the transition from pro or sw to unigraphics.

Not whats better or whats worse.

They can all create parametric solid models. The user interfaces are the stumbling block to switching.

Hey, I just left a company that used Solidworks for the last 5 years for a new company that uses UG NX2.

UGs interface will be painfully to learn at first, nowhere near as user friendly. There are certain areas though that you can tell have been worked and aren't too bad and some functions do work better than Solidworks. I particularly like the middle mouse button that steps you through the command and acts as the "OK" button.

UG sketcher functions similiar and I had little trouble picking it. Does lack some of Solidworks refinements but they are close.

Modeling is similar, Extruded, Revolves, sweeps, etc. Everythings done with boolean operations though. So there is one extrude command which ask you to Unite, Subtract, Intersect at the end of the function.

Assembly uses mate like Solidworks. Not real crazy about the way it works though. Solidworks seems to allow for easier mating back and forth between parts where UG seems to make you go down a path.

Drawings work well and fast with lots of display control options. More flexiblity here than Solidworks and here the interface seems to have received the most work. Do wish you had drawing view sketch associativity like Solidworks.

Biggest peeve I have with UG is configuration, or lack of them. This is Solidworks biggest strength in my opinion. There is a family of parts function but the variations are saved as separate files and it seems difficult to me to manipulate them. So much so that few here use the function, where as configurations got heavy use where I worked before.

Anyway, it's quite a switch. I've been here almost 6 month now and the company alone is worth my UG woes, though I'm much more used to it. Just prepare yourself for the first months of pulling your hair out.

Thanks for the info.

Gildashard- When you talk about UG and middle button being "OK" that reminds me of Pro/E (which i actually havent used in a year) But i had some of the same thought when i went from Pro/E to SW. But Solidworks seems to be a much more simple program to understand and grasp. It makes it easier it seems to get from here to there with less steps at times. But i also considered the drawing capabilities easier and more functional in Pro/E than SW. So im thinking UG will be more comperable to Pro than solidworks. So since having exp. with Pro, i hope to not stuggle to bad with UG. Again thanks.

More info would be appreciated, also if anyone knows of site i can explore that may have info on the workings of UG that would be great.

UG has drawing view sketch associativity.
Go to:
Application-Drafting-Insert-Feature Parameters...
Expand features and select sketch then select view and apply. Sketch dims will be added to drawing view.
