Silicon uptake

(OP)
How does steel absorb silicon for alloying during a melt? What form of silicon is added, and under what conditions?
I hope this is an appropriate question for this forum. Thanks, Jerry

RE: Silicon uptake

I know that FerroSilicon is what we used in the pilot castings lab. I believe the composition was Fe-75%wt Si

I love materials science!

RE: Silicon uptake

For small heats and test work we added pure Si metal.  The only problem with FeSi is variations in C and B levels.  Lumps of pure Si are redily available as 99.95% or better.

There are a lot of FeSi grades.  You need to know the amount of Si you are trying to add, the impact of other impurities and the thermal effects (exothermic heating).
