hello all,

i have a maginsium bracket to which i want to connect a nipple made of steel or aluminium. which 1 is more suitable? where can i find some info about that?

btw, i am also worried about the thread in the bracket. i don't want to damage it. is that a problem with those metals?

First of all,what kind of environment will this assembly operate in? If you will be using this in a corrosive environment, the steel could be made to work, if totally isolated electrically from the mag. But the aluminum would probably be the best bet. Do you have a choice of aluminum alloys you can use? Some are better galvanically with mag than others.

thanks swall for your quick response!

My prior concern is the bracket. second is the nipple. the mag can live well with the alum?
the environment shouldn't be too humid, because it is well vented. the temperature of the metals can get to more than 150C deg. and through the nipple (and bracket) there will be hot oil running (around 100 deg).

i don't remember the type of alum. i can check it. it is a standard nipple and i have the ms somewhere.

As swall mentioned, aluminum is more compatible with magnesium than steel is.  6061 aluminum (Al-Mg-Si alloy) is more compatible than 7075 (Al-Zn-Cu-Mg alloy).  At 150 C creep (bolt load retention) will be an issue for magnesium.  Have you analyzed the joint requirements yet?  Applied forces, moments, vibration, thermal cycling, etc.?  Thread stripping could be an issue if the joint is not designed properly.
