Excavation Transport Costs
Excavation Transport Costs
(OP)
I am working on the preliminary design of a 10 mile new highway design project which involves large volume of rock cut/excavation (approxamately 6 million CY). The project is located in a very rural mountainous area and access is a big issue. The project is split down the middle with a large valley and a large stream. Most of the excavation occurs on one side of the valley, and most of the embankment occurs on the other side. The project is also also about a 2 million CY waste project.
My question is I'm trying to develop a realistic contruciton sequencing for the project and the cheapest method to move the excavation. My question is two parts.
1)What is the increase in cost of transporting the excavation on dumptrucks by road around the valley to to ebmankment area on the other side (approxamately 20 miles). Could building a temporary haul roadway and temporary structure and using larger trucks be a cheaper alternative?
2)With the 2 million CY waste, what is the additional cost of hauling offsite once again by roadway vs. purchasing addiontal wasting areas on site?

Have you looked at revising your profile grade to minimize or utilize waste fill. Perhaps you have geometric constraints. Also you may want to steepen up your cutslopes. I presume you have examined these options already
Is there any need for riprap material at existing sites, erosion control in ditches etc. You have a large amount of waste and generally that tells me that there is a need to revisit, the design. Comments by Dicksewerrat are pertinet as well.
