I am a transportation engineer that has to deal with some street lighting from time to time.  I would like to know if there is a good reference for someone like me to use when reviewing streetlight projects.  Something that explains in basic terms.  I only see relatively simple systems. No high mast lighting or complicated urban systems.  Thanks

RE: Reference material

The local standards (national, as well as any local area / city requirements) could be useful.

Life is non-linear...

RE: Reference material

Rant: The design of most street lighting is prehistoric. It would be nice if they could arrange the light pattern so that it would shine onto the road instead of directly into the drivers' eyes (reducing contrast).  The 'standards' do not appear to include even the slightest consideration of the true purpose of lighting or efficiency.

RE: Reference material

Hi VE1BILL, isn't the true purpose of street lighting to keep the nuclear reactors loaded during the off peak times?

I've found the RP-8 and it is more to do with the light aspect and less to do with the electrical workings.

RE: Reference material

Sorry, I thought the illumination stuff was  what you wanted.

I take it that you are looking for practical aspects of installing roadway lighting equipment?  I have an old standard for that, but I'll have to do a bit of looking to find it...

Thanks, that would be very helpful.

RE: Reference material

Check with GE lighting representative in your area. they have a large designers catalog that covers street lighting. also some of the brighter lighting representative can help you with your lighting . the IES also have handbooks on street lighting that you may find useful.Usually lighting pole for street light are place by local utility codes, check with them too.
