-ologies and -ographies

-ologies and -ographies

What other terms beside the common biography, cartography, choreography, geography, topography, as well as anthology, astrology, criminology, ecology, etymology, hæmatology, oncology, pharmacology, topology, toxicology, tribology, you know ?

I assume there should be at least around 100 words more with those endings. Can you bring some more examples ?

RE: -ologies and -ographies

As you know the -ology and -ography comes from the Greek language.

If you ask the "inverted" dictionary at the site http://kastor.komvos.edu.gr/dictionaries/dictOnLine/DictOnLineRev.htm to show the greek words that end at -????? you will get 522 greek words. Here are a few of them : adenology, egyptyology, hematology, anestisiology, anthropology, antilogy, apology, arithmology, biotechnology, geneaology, geology, ethnology, ethology, zoology, mythology, necrology, neurology, ecology, ornithology, sismology, spileology, tautology, technology, typology, hydrology, psychology.

For greek words ending at -ography (-??????) you get only 291 word, Some of them : anorthography, bibliography, thalassography, kaligraphy, olography, pornography, telegraphy, phasmatography, chromatography, oceanography.

Costas, how can I get your link in English ?

RE: -ologies and -ographies

the "-ology" refers to a body of knowledge.  "-graphy" refers to documentation.  Thus, "biology" is study (gaining knowledge" of life, and biography is a documentation of a life.

Language being what it is, the rules are not hard and fast.

What about astrology vs. astronomy?

I could be the world's greatest underachiever, if I could just learn to apply myself.

RE: -ologies and -ographies

I read somewhere once that Elton John got his start in the sixties in a group called "Bluesology."

I thought Elton was involved in proctology!

Tautology

RE: -ologies and -ographies

Probably the worst "-ology" word is methodology.  This word is often misused by people who can't bring themselves to simply use the word method without adding the extra three sylables "-ology."

RE: -ologies and -ographies

re: "methodology"

In this age of buzzwords and politically correct code words, nothing hits home quite like plain English and small words.

RE: -ologies and -ographies

Hey get of my methodology soapbox already and see:

Morphology -- Now I must look it "up" to find the meaning!

Metallography

RE: -ologies and -ographies

And here it is:

mor·phol·o·gy    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (môr-fl-j)
n. pl. mor·phol·o·gies

The branch of biology that deals with the form and structure of organisms without consideration of function.
The form and structure of an organism or one of its parts: the morphology of a cell; the morphology of vertebrates.

Linguistics. The study of the structure and form of words in language or a language, including inflection, derivation, and the formation of compounds.

The second definition seems to fit properly in this thread.
