Annealing low carbon steel

Annealing low carbon steel

Annealing low carbon steel

i need to anneal small pieces of steel and i'd like to be able to do so at home. i've seen kilns used for annealing glass beads and i'm wondering if i can use one of these. do benchtop kilns or ovens that are capable of annealing steel exist? if someone can point me in the right direction, i'd greatly appreciate it. thanks.

RE: Annealing low carbon steel

Come back with a little more information as to the particular steel you are interested in annealing.

Better yet what you are try to accomplish as most low carbon steels you by are essentially in the annealed state. Cold rolled still can loss a point or two, but hot rolled is about as soft as it will get.

Yes these kilns and glass ovens can be used but they are a little tricky due to having protect the metal from oxygen while you are heat treating.

thanks for the reply. i'm trying to get the steel as soft as i can. it's low carbon steel, 1006 to 1010. so if i can get it hot rolled it will be in it's softest state? i need .375 diameter rod, do you know who might carry this? thanks again for the help.

RE: Annealing low carbon steel

If you need quantity any steel service center will be able to get it for you.

If you need small piece, check with a local machine or ornamental iron shop.
