Metering Application Help

Metering Application Help

(OP)
Since I am a Mechanical engineer, I need some help if possible.  I have installed a tankless hot water heater that draws about 54 Amps @ 240V when in operation.  It only works when the hot water is turned on, this on demand thing is supposed to save alot of money, anyway, this device is mounted in the crawlspace of my house.  My problem is that I would like to add some indication inside my house when the device is ON, just worried about something going wrong and the thing does not shut off and runs continous.  I was thinking of just adding a current sensor around the wire and running the wires inside my  house to a indicating LED.  However, this is where the brain storm stops.  Any ideas on how to do a circuit such as this?
thanks in advance
