Dimensions adding an M

Dimensions adding an M

Dimensions adding an M

(OP)
I like to create my own dimensions in a drawing rather than inserting model dimensions.
This is the first time I have used the drawing package of SW2005 and I am having a little difficulty.

For some reason every time I attach a dim to a threaded hole an M is inserted leading the dimension. If I am careful and select the hole and not the thread the M does not appear.

What is the M, and how do I get rid of it

RE: Dimensions adding an M

Metric

& all the best.

RE: Dimensions adding an M

(OP)
Why only when it attaches to a thread.

And how do I get rid of it.

RE: Dimensions adding an M

I am assuming that you have called up a metric thread & the standard prefix designation for that is M, as in M12 signifying that the hole has a 12mm OD thread.
If you are working in the ISO standard, then you cannot(as far as I know) switch the M off.

& all the best.

RE: Dimensions adding an M

What has happened is that I work in metric (british). Some time in past history the normal template has been set up as ISO not BSI.

Then in the upgrade to 2005, a modified hole table has been corrected loosing the hole data from the model. The hole although called an M8 in the feature table and producing an M8 in the thread callout has run home and reset to some English (American) standard.

So the drawing has produced a mixture of dim standards. The M prefix is new to me because I work in metric and never see it.

What needs to be done is for America to go metric.

RE: Dimensions adding an M

Don't hold your breath. If they ever do they will probably use Americanese anyway.

& all the best.

RE: Dimensions adding an M

SW2005 sp0
When I make a drawing (part files were generated using mm units - if that matters), I get a linear dimension with "M" as a prefix in front of the number.  These are driving dimensions, it does not do this with dimesions with diameter symbol or an "R"  prefix.

BTW it does not matter if it is ANSI, DIN  or ISO.  The same thing happens.  I can edit and remove the M but it has to be done for each dimension.  If I reload the format (format_file.slddrt), the "M" reappears.

How can this feature (bug) be turned off?

RE: Dimensions adding an M

Weird ... can you upgrade to SP0.1 to see if that fixes the problem?
You may also be able to update to SP1EV. Others here may have more info on this.

& all the best.

RE: Dimensions adding an M

More on the infamous "M"

It seems to occur only with linear dimensions locating threaded holes (probably Joshposh's original complaint).  Moving to sp 0.1 does not change or fix it.

RE: Dimensions adding an M

(OP)
I am already on sp 0.1 and the problem is still with me.

But this is the strange thing. It only appears on some drawings even if the same hole from the wizard is used on different parts.

I have spoken to my VAR who said that is probably a bug because others have reported it but it might be a feature he didn't know. But if it was a bug it would be fixed with SP1 but he couldn't confirm it!!!!

RE: Dimensions adding an M

I reported this error quite some time ago.
This occurs when I show a dim between two (or more) metric threaded holes. When you select a first circle of the threaded hole, SWX "thinks" you want to dim. thread and puts M in front of dimension.
To work around it - select center marks instead of clicking on a circle of the hole.
I was told this issue should be resolved in SP1.0.
I hear a lot of people find SWX2005 bugless and smooth running. Not me! SP0.1 has too many
Especially when it comes to detailing.
