Adding symbols in Note

Adding symbols in Note

(OP)
How can I include a degree symbol when adding a Note in a drawing?

Thanks to all the readers.

That function is in the Text Format section in the Teaxt dialogue box. It has a CL & + on the button.

& all the best.

Thanks CorBlimeyLimey. What should I do so that BOM would display symbols as well? It might be possible to add a symbol by editing the BOM in Excel but is there a better way? I guess this is connected to the ability of adding symbols in Custom properties of parts.

RE: Adding symbols in Note

If you need it in the custom properties of the part, you can use the "ALT" codes of the symbols (if you know them) or use the Windows Character Map to insert them.

& all the best.

If you need to add the degree symbol to a custom property in a part use the "ALT" codes as CBL had pointed out.

What you need to do is is hold down the "ALT" key while pressing the corresponding codes below, then release. These symbols can also be used when naming features of a part etc.

° = 0176
• = 0149
© = 0169
® = 0174
± = 0177

Hope this helps!

Jon

RE: Adding symbols in Note

I never understood that? DO you have to hold all these keys down at one time and release or do you hold down the Alt key and press each number?

I have always tried the 2nd way but never got those codes to work.

RE: Adding symbols in Note

Scott,

Hold down the "ALT" while typing "0", "1", "7", "6"

still have the "ALT" key held down?

Good.

Now release the "ALT" key.

You now should have this °

other alt codes

also alt 0216 is diameter symbol
also alt 241 and alt 248 can be used for degree and plus/minus symbols

RE: Adding symbols in Note

Does anyone have a "ALT" code cheat sheet in MSword format?

Jon

RE: Adding symbols in Note

Open the Windows "Character map" & click on any symbol ... the corresponding "ALT" code will be seen in the bottom RH corner.

& all the best.

I just tried putting ALT code 0176 for a degree symbol in Custom Properties of one of my parts. I did what jksolid suggested. The symbol doesn't show up in the BOM. Any suggestions?

RE: Adding symbols in Note

Thanks Scott,

That means alot coming from you.

Scott is right. Type in the code in your part properties as  I have discussed above. When you type the symbol in SW2001+ in the custom properties you will see a black line appear instead of the symbol you wanted. However when you go to the drawing and insert the BOM the correct symbol appears.

Just tested it on SW2001+ and works just fine.

RE: Adding symbols in Note

Do not forget that you can always create special symbols (not available with ALT+number) using the gtol.sym file.

RE: Adding symbols in Note

Hey Mk,
Make sure you use the number pad and not the numbers above the letters. It will work just as suggested on my computer only if I use the number pad.

RE: Adding symbols in Note

A little note, the character codes are linked to the font style.  In other words, Alt +0176 in most fonts is the degree symbol, but in others it changes.  Try it and you'll know what I mean.  If you're using the default Arial font, show the degree symbol, then start changing the font style, it will change for certain font types.  And remember this has nothing to do with SW, it's a function of Windows.

As far as cheat sheet, I have one from CorelDraw that's a two sided card.  No word format though.

RE: Adding symbols in Note

Sorry, the degree symbol is not a good example, guess I should have tried it first.  "it's only some symbols are different, and probably the more obscure one".  sorry.

RE: Adding symbols in Note

Important note of information -  These are high level ASCI Characters and may not display properly in DXF files on Mac systems.  We have a custom created DXF viewer for our mac systems and when using the high level asci characters the viewer does not even recognize the DXF file as a valid DXF file and will not view it.  This may apply to other users exporting files to cross platforms.

Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. And scratch where it itches.

RE: Adding symbols in Note

Have you ever wanted that second line in properties?  I did!

ALT 0010
